Hey all,
USB 3.0 is an exciting and still growing technology. It allows us to provide high bandwidth to a device without using a PCI-express slot. This makes installation much simpler and more straight forward. The idea is that you shouldn't have to open your computer to attach your device.
Now, reality is that this technology is still relatively new and to my knowledge BMD is one of the only companies that are pushing USB 3.0 tech to the limits. For these reasons not every USB 3.0 system is suitable for use with Blackmagic Design USB 3.0 products.
For a quick look at what to look for while setting up a USB 3.0 machine please check this FAQ section on our website:

What we've found is that in reality most USB 3.0 controllers are still attached to the south bridge of the computer or laptop motherboard. Or they are not connected to a PCI-express 2.0 controller. In these cases the USB 3.0 controller may not be getting enough throughput to be able to handle high bandwidth video. Our application runs a small test in the back ground when the device is connected to let you know if the bandwidth is suitable.
As USB 3.0 matures we see more and more systems that work, but it can still be a bit tricky, so check out the FAQ and feel free to contact Blackmagic Design with any specific questions you might have.
Sincerely,
Joshua
